From his well-known poem, I See His Blood upon the Rose
to his
beautiful sonnets, the poems of Joseph Mary Plunkett (1887-1916),
are filled with passion, imagery and romance.
Joseph's short lifetime was filled with activity. He was a scholar, an editor of the Irish Review, a co-founder of the Irish Theatre, a member of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Republican Brotherhood, an organizer of the 1916 Rising, and a signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. He was executed for his part in the Rising, and is buried in Arbour Hill Cemetary in Dublin.
Joseph Plunkett was a brilliant man who had only enough time in his 28 years to show us his potential.
